Begin the summer by scheduling regular maintenance for your cooling equipment, clearing leaves and debris around the unit, and replacing your filter to ensure that your AC runs efficiently. Remember to continue replacing or vacuuming your air filter throughout the summer to remove any dust buildup. No matter how small these initial steps may seem, they can add up to significant energy savings over time.
Before cranking up the AC, consider taking these few extra steps to weatherize your home and prepare for the summer heat ahead.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Wi-Fi and smart thermostats are good options.
- Keep blinds and drapes closed during the day Rotate your ceiling fan to turn counterclockwise to create a wind chill effect.
- Set your thermostat to 4 degrees higher when away for more than four hours.
- Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around doors and windows.
- Set your water heater at no more than 120 degrees F.
